Todd Elder Sets World Record for Sheepshead Spearfishing Catch

Virginia Beach resident Todd Elder proudly set the world record for a sheepshead spearfishing catch at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on May 31, 2023. The 17.4-pound fish, known for its human-like teeth, was landed after an impressive display of skill and determination by Elder. His success is sure to be celebrated by avid anglers around the world.

It's also an incredible opportunity to introduce sheepshead to the many who may not be familiar with this exciting fish.

Spearfishing in this bay may be a trial-and-error process due to the murky waters, but Elder remains confident and calm while making dives. On one especially successful dive, a “big boy” was visible 40 feet below alongside some “abnormally large fish.”

His persistence paid off, as he confidently aimed for the eyes of the largest fish and fired - securing an impressive world record of 15 pounds for a sheepshead, just 4 pounds away from the overall “all tackle” record.

Elder was filled with exhilaration and anticipation - not just for the achievement, but also for the delicious meal that he had caught. His catch ended up being the star of a spectacular Mother’s Day dinner that he prepared for his family. With its light white flesh, firm texture and versatile cooking methods, Elder boasted that the sheepshead was “awesome” and certainly not something to get bored of eating. He could cook it whole on the grill or in the oven, bake it, fry it, deep fry or air fry - however “Bubba” Blue would say it.

And to add to the satisfaction, Elder was proud to share that very few pieces of the fish went to waste: “If you were just taking fillets of the fish, you’re utilizing on a sheepshead, at best case scenario, that’s just a 25-30%.”

An Affordable Option for Fish Trimmings

Elder of Virginia Beach Seafood Company is proud to be offering a unique service, providing trimmings from overlooked places like between the spines of the fish at an unbeatable price of $10 per pound compared to the usual market rate of $27 per pound for fillets. These trimmings are great for creating flavorful dishes such as fish dips, ceviche, and fish cakes. With this affordable option, Elder hopes to get more people to appreciate the taste of fish with bones in it.

Spearfishing is the main method of catching fish for the company, particularly Sheepshead which is “by far” the most common catch in the summer. This makes it easier to observe and be aware of what is below the surface of the ocean.

Todd Elder’s accomplished method of sheepshead spearfishing in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has set a precedent for all aspiring such anglers. His record-breaking 17.4-pound catch, moreover, allows for an appreciation of this unusual yet exciting fish by those unfamiliar. Even with tricky conditions and murky water, Elder never gave up on his attempts—a show of strength any Fisher can appreciate. By coupling skill and patience, Elder broke the world record for sheepshead fishing—an inspiring feat that will motivate and captivate avid anglers now and in the future.
