Exciting New Opportunities Ahead for Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Imagine a world where the spectacular Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge becomes not only a haven for wildlife, but also a hub for exciting races and birding events. Well, this could soon become a reality as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proudly considers opening up the refuge to these types of activities. In fact, they are already seeking public input on a draft compatibility determination that would allow competitive running races, bike races, and birding events within the refuge. This proposal not only promotes recreational opportunities, but also honors the refuge's mission and operations - a true source of pride for all involved.

And don't worry, these events will be carefully managed and limited to specific areas to ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife. So let's come together and support this exciting new chapter for Back Bay NWR!

During the winter months, from November to March, we have the opportunity to host competitive running and bike events, with a maximum of two each, for up to 50 participants. Our birding cups will also continue to be held all year-round, with a limit of four cups per year and a maximum of 35 participants. This balanced approach allows for both leisure and sport, while still protecting the refuge and all its inhabitants. We can't wait to see the positive impact these events will have on our beloved refuge and its visitors.

Get ready to connect with nature and join us in celebrating this beautiful natural resource! Together, we can promote stewardship of the refuge system and foster a deeper appreciation for its ecological significance. Share your thoughts and submit your comments, we would love to hear from you. Remember to mark your calendars, as the deadline for submissions is January 16, 2024. Let's make this a memorable and successful endeavor for everyone involved!
