It is without a doubt that extreme heat has found its way into American households this year. From Death Valley on the cusp of setting the global heat record to triple-digit temperatures in the Southwest, families all over the country are already feeling the burden of the soaring costs associated with keeping their homes cool. Though energy bills remain high, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is providing an invaluable service to groups nationwide who would otherwise be overlooked in times like these. All members of society are now responsible for helping take action to mitigate further climate change.

This year's heat wave is expected to be one of the most extreme on record, as evidenced by temperature records being broken across the U.S. The Southwest is experiencing a triple-digit heat wave which looks set to become the longest heat wave on record, while parts of the Southern U.S., Midwest, and south Florida are enduring heat indexes reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods. In response, the White House has convened mayors, local officials, and tribal officials from communities nationwide to prepare for "long-duration extreme heat events." It is clear that this year is truly extraordinary and will set a lasting mark in history.

Not only is historic heat a health and safety concern, but also a financial burden for millions of households. Despite the rising costs, people are still striving to keep their homes and businesses cool by incurring soaring energy bills. On average, households across the nation are expected to pay nearly $200 a month for electricity, with many cities experiencing even higher costs.

Despite the financial burden faced by millions of Americans, states and the federal government have made strides to assist with energy bills. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has allocated $6 billion for 2023, providing a valuable lifeline to those in need. Moreover, Death Valley is set to break the global heat record with temperatures estimated at 130-132 degrees, showing how Americans are already taking steps towards mitigating climate change.

Ultimately, the urgency of extreme heat protection is undeniable and provides a basic need for all.

Providing Shade to Schools in Low-Income Areas

California is tackling the issue of rising temperatures in urban environments by implementing policies that ensure 100 schools receive additional shade. Studies have found a link between average income and temperature, with poorer neighborhoods tending to be hotter. To combat this, communities have been working together to add more shade to their schools. NASA and Census Bureau data has indicated that these initiatives are having a positive effect on reducing temperatures in areas where it's needed most.

The state is also working to expand access to medical facilities and increase awareness of the risks associated with extreme heat in rural areas, in order to keep citizens safe.
