Living in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, VA Community

From Virginia Beach visitors making the best of their last beach day, to events like the 20th annual Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic, Memorial Day in Virginia Beach has held no shortage of enjoyable activities amidst rough water conditions. Visitors Christine and Donnie Walter with their kids overjoyed a trip down to the Oceanfront to finally enjoy beach activities while Bridgette Dickson and her family from North Carolina braved the waters for some family fun. Contest Director Wes Laine remains enthusiastic for the WSL rated event that hosts professional long boarders from all over.

Visitors at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront were able to get some much needed beach time on Monday, the last day of their stay. Christine and Donnie Walter brought their kids to visit their grandparents this weekend, and they were delighted that they could finally take part in some beach activities. Christine Walter expressed her pleasure saying, “It's always a good time to get out of the city and come down here.” The Walters further enjoyed their time by playing board games. Memorial Day may have not had the best weather, but it was certainly made better by the Walters' joyous visit.

Despite rough water conditions, Bridgette Dickson and her family from North Carolina embraced the opportunity to make the most of their last day at the beach. Having been cooped up all weekend due to rain, the kids were eager to get in the water and build sandcastles on the Oceanfront. Bridgette noted that the waves had been strong, but that didn't stop them from having a wonderful time.

The 20th annual Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic was in full swing Monday morning with contests from some of the world's best professional long boarders. Contest Director Wes Laine expressed his excitement for this year's event, which has been rated a World Surf League (WSL) 1,000, and that several of the competitors are from Virginia Beach. Despite having to delay the opening two days of the competition due to bad weather, Laine proudly spoke of the great surfers that have come to town and the clean conditions that they were blessed with.

Additionally, the Surf Art Expo, which has been a staple of the event since 2008, is back and bigger than ever. Founder Jodie Woodward said that when they started out there were only a few vendors, but now there are about 50 artists from up and down the East Coast, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, participating in the show.

Monday on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront was a reminder that even on a gray Memorial Day weekend there can still be meaningful outdoor experiences. Christine and Donnie finally had a chance for beach bliss with their kids, thanks in part to the Steel Pier Classic longboarders. From towns near and far, families chose to flaunt holiday plans, ready to make heavy of water conditions and bask in sunshine Monday morning—under wallpapered clouds, inviting warmth replaced by uncertainty prior days made possible family fun-in-the-sun that will guarantee fully filled vacations worthy of rememberance.
